the college girls guide to: dealing with homesickness

Last week we talked about friends, but today we’re going to talk about the people that really matter. Family.

It’s really easy to get swept up in everything while you’re at school and forget about your family. It’s also really easy to get homesick and want to go home every weekend.

Today I’m going to give you some tips on how to deal with feeling homesick, but also how to keep you from going home every weekend.

It’s totally ok to go home every now and then, but if you spend every weekend of your college years going home, you won’t ever really experience college the way you want.

🩷 Call your family!

  • - Whether this is a quick phone call on the way to class or a long FaceTime at night. Just call them. It will make you feel better, and it will help remind them that you are ok. I try to call my parents as often as possible, just hearing their voice always makes me feel better. Try to FaceTime them if you can, seeing them is always a plus, and your parents will love it too, they miss you just as much as you miss them!

  • - Don’t be afraid to text them random updates throughout the day. This will help your parents feel more connected to what’s going on in your life and it gives you someone to tell all the mundane details too.

🧡 Plan visits home!

  • - Whether you’re going home for a break or even just a long weekend. Plan out when you’re going home so you can have something you look forward to. This can be tricky if you go to school far away, but if you can, try to go home on all of your breaks. This gives you time to spend quality time with your family and get away from school for a little.

  • - Invite your parents to come see you too. Whether it’s for a football game or just because, they’ll love that you asked, and you might even get some groceries and a good meal out of it 😌

🩷 Make yourself busy!

  • - I don’t mean keeping busy every second of every day but try to plan time with your friends and join clubs so you have something that will take up your afternoons. I find I miss my family more in the afternoons when I don’t have as much to do, because I can sit around and think about it.

🧡 Make your dorm feel homey!

  • - Put up pictures of you and your family or decorate in a way that reminds you of home, this way you feel a little more connected. I have a couple of collages beside my bed that have pictures of my friends and family in them and I have some on my desk too. I also have a stuffed animal that my parents gave me on my bed, that way whenever I see it I think of them.

🩷 Hang out with your friends!

  • - A lot of times when I feel homesick, but can’t go home, I hang out with my friends, and it always makes me feel better! Just being with people who care about me makes me feel good and I know they get homesick too, so we always talk about our families.

Always remember that it’s ok to be homesick, it’s totally normal and you’re not the only one.

Here’s a pic of me and my family:

Till next time,
